Two upcoming Peace events -
1) Join a peaceful group of Rhode Islanders at 10:30am on Tuesday at Burnside Park in Providence (at the northwest corner of Kennedy Plaza, near the Federal Court House). The purpose of the gathering is to "communicate" with Chief Justice Roberts' during his visit, that we have concerns with several issues with which the Supreme Court has had and will have an influence in the future.
Following the Roberts' media release below, please find two attachments. The 1st is the flyer for the event and the 2nd is a statement as to why we need to communicate with Justice Roberts. (This 2nd flyer has a few typos in it and these will be corrected before its official release.)

2) Join a group to hear Noah Merrill talk about his latest trip to Jordan & Syria to assist Iraqi refugees.

RHODE ISLANDERS TO DEMAND CLOSURE OF GUANTANAMO AND END TO U.S. USE OF TORTURE.

On Feb. 12, concurrent with the Providence visit of Chief Justice John Roberts, a coalition of RI community, religious, and political groups will hold a rally and procession at the Federal Courthouse on Kennedy Plaza. The purpose of this action is to bring attention to the following critical demands: close the Guantanamo gulag, end all U.S. involvement in torture, end illegal spying, and restore the Bill of Rights.

Although all three branches of the Federal Government have acted to debase the very concept of justice, ordinary citizens will peacefully and solemnly gather to assert their civil liberties and invoke principles to counter the empty, congratulatory posturing behind the Roberts visit. "Since the Chief Justice is a stalwart neocon," notes Sam Smith of East Bay MoveOn, "we fear that the Supreme Court will legitimize the roll-back of civil liberties wrought by the Bush administration".

"As a citizen of the U.S. and member of the world community," adds Kathy Lessuck of the RI Community Coalition for Peace, "I am saddened, sickened, and embarrassed by our practice and promotion of torture, as well as the continued existence of Guantanamo and other secret U.S. prisons throughout the world."

"Also very troubling," says Chris Murphy of the International Socialist Organization, "is that no current Presidential candidate seems even moderately interested in removing these threats to our freedom and humanity."

Gathering will begin at 10:30 am on Tuesday Feb. 12 at Burnside Park, adjacent to Kennedy Plaza. After a brief rally, citizens will move in procession toward the Federal Building.

Stand Up. Reach Out. A Benefit for Iraqi Refugees & Displaced People

Presented by East Bay Citizens for Peace

Featured Speaker: Noah Baker Merrill, Coordinator of Direct Aid Initiative and former Program Coordinator for the American Friends Service Committee Providence office, spent five months in 2007 living and working among Iraqi refugees in Jordan and Syria. Direct Aid Initiative is a grassroots humanitarian effort providing medical care to displaced Iraqis through funds contributed by American families.

Music : Barry Brown, known for his finger style guitar playing, has shared the stage with Pete Seeger, Sonny Terry and Brownie McGhee. Over the past 25 years Barry has performed locally in coffee houses and clubs. His recordings feature his original compositions about health and healing.

Nancy Hood , classically trained singer, draws a standing room only crowd at her annual Christmas at Blithewold concerts. Her program, "I've Got a Song:- a living history of the McCarthy era", has made the rounds to libraries and colleges throughout the state. She and Rick Keller, keyboard, will perform a mix of folk and cabaret songs

Phil Edmonds, Cathy Clasper-Torch, Peter Breen & Otis Read of The Gnomes will perform their energetic blend of Irish & World Music.

LeRoy White in his over 38 years of performing has played on bills from Ike & Tina Turner to Kiss, Tim Harden and Herbie Mann. His music which is an expression of his "growing humble inner self" delights his audience with its ethnic, urban and new age fusion of jazz, rock, pop and soul.
